Does anyone know the exact date Halley's comet was visible in 1682 (the year of Edmond Halley's studies)?

  1. Comets are not visible on "exact dates." They are relatively slow-moving objects, and are usually observed many times over a period of weeks to months.

Perihelion was on September 15th, 1682.  The comet would have been visible in early August, but I don't have the exact date, or if anyone really noticed it in August.  You might check in his book, Astronomiae Cometicae Synopsis (Synopsis on Cometary Astronomy).  There he mentions a date of Sept 4th, which might be the date he measured the position of the comet.

    While the comet was closest to Earth on the evening of August 31, it should be have been noticed many days before that.  It was within 1 AU on Aug 11.
