I need to know the Indiana Code for property storage. When a person stores for another person.

  1. In Indiana there is legislation specific to abandoned vehicles, real estate, and a land lord's right to items abandoned on their property.

    If this person lived with you, even as a favor, you're considered their land lord.

    There's no code specific to simply storing stuff for someone else.  However, there is some legal precedent requiring written notice before destroying or converting someone else's property.  Send a certified or registered letter giving fifteen or thirty days' notice as to the date you will take control of the property.  ("Property will be considered abandoned at midnight on the 25th of September, 2008," for example.)  Give specifics as to the property you have.  Set an appointment for where and when it is to be retrieved ("Meet at [give address] at ten am on Saturday, September 13, 2008," for example), guidelines for rescheduling, and the number(s) where you can be reached.  That way the person cannot say they didn't know, or you didn't give them an opportunity to retrieve their property.
