The Theosophical Society started out in NYC and moved its international head quarters to Adyar, Madras. It was original founded by a group of people, but the main firgure assosiated with the early Theosophical Society was Helena Blavatsky. When she died in 1891 the American William Quan Judge (who was also an original Theosophical Society founder) was in a dispute with some of the other founders and as a result splintered off a new organization in 1895 that came to be known as The Theosophical Society Pasadena. He only managed it for one year.
