....around 35,000 feet when the plane she was on exploded in mid-air? I think it was in the 70's at some point, and she was listed in the Guinness Book of Records for a time as the world's greatest survivor. She was either Scandinavian or East European I think. Thanks.

  1. wow, any death would be lame after that (she survived a midair explosion, and she survived a 35k fall, but a poorly-cooked chicken claimed her life).

  2. So not only did she survive an explosion, but a 35,000 ft drop?

Surely she would have died on the way down, if not from the pressure crushing her body, then at least from the shock of the whole thing.

  3. Lucky?

  4. Vesna Vulović

  5. Mary Poppins

  6. Vesna Vulovic

Vesna currently holds the Guinness World Record for the highest fall survived without a parachute, at 33,330 feet.

  7. What I wanna know is what she fell on to save her life.

  8. Found this on a parachute freefall site...

Vesna Vulovic, a flight attendant who in 1972 fell 33,000 feet in the tail of an exploded DC-9 jetliner; she landed in snow and lived.

Joe Hermann of the Royal Australian Air Force, blown out of his bomber in 1944 without a parachute. He found himself falling through the night sky amid airplane debris and wildly grabbed a piece of it. It turned out to be not debris at all, but rather a fellow flyer in the process of pulling his ripcord. Joe hung on and, as a courtesy, hit the ground first, breaking the fall of his savior and a mere two ribs of his own. Joe was not a quitter.

Think of Nick Alkemade, an RAF tailgunner who jumped from his flaming turret without a parachute and fell 18,000 feet. When he came to and saw stars overhead, he lit a cigarette. He would later describe the fall as "a pleasant experience." Nick's trick: fir trees, underbrush, and snow.
