I am pretty sure that you are thinking of the WBA featherweight titleholder, Chris John (41-0-1, 22 KOs).  He is from Indonesia, and almost all of his fights have been over there.  In 2006 he fought Juan Manuel Marquez in Indonesia and beat him by a unanimous decision that some people felt was unfair.
