I was told that some early players wanted to copy the New Zealand haka. They didn't know the words to the haka so substitued them for "Knees up Mother Brown".

Goodbye Dolly Gray:

" The song was written by Will D. Cobb (lyrics) and Paul Barnes (music). Although it gained widespread fame during the Boer War it had earlier been sung in the U.S. during the U.S.-Spanish War of 1898. The song saw renewed airings with the onset of the First World War in 1914."

The words don't really fit the Collingwood tune until the last verse.

So basically it was a popular Spanish-War anthem. However it gained exposure amongst Australians after it was sung in the Boer War in South Africa.

From the Collingwood FC Illustrated Encyclopedia it says a young Collingwood player, Tom Nelson, took the tune and made the words up in 1906. It is the oldest Club song.

Also in 1983 the "Oh the premierships a cakewalk" was changed to "There is just one team we favour" but it wasn't accepted by fans.
