  1. It's probably English of Lowland Scottish.  In the Middle Ages, around the time that last names were becoming common, many nicknames for popular masculine names began with H, no matter what the original initial, but maybe especially is the original initial was R.  Hitchen or Hitchin was a nickname for Richard, just  as Hob and Hopkin were for Robert and Hodge for Roger.  So Hitchinson would be "son of some man named Richard whose nickname was Hitchin."  Patronymics formed from nicknames seem to have been especially common in the Scottish Lowlands.


  2. It means the 'Son of Hitchin'.  Other than that there isn't much i could tell you.  If you want more information on it i would try websites like ancestry.com.

  3. This is not very common in the census.  It is definitely of English origin.
