my aunt is having difficulty finding good care for her teenage daughter who is 18, she has left school and is at a centre through the day, my cousin is very unhappy at this centre and having discussed things with my aunt (who is a head teacher and cant give up work) i said i would give up my office job and look after her, i know its not about the money and we just want the best care for my little cousin but i need to weigh up if i can afford to do this as i have a mortgage and bills to pay.

My aunt has enquired with social work about this but we dont want to ask about money. thanks x

  1. She should be entitled to carer's allowance which is just under £50 per week, my wife used to get it for her grandmother, before she sadly passed away.

  2. if in Uk then you will get very little money - not enough to live by.  Carers Allowance is based upon need and if social care decide she does not need carer then you will got no carers allowance

I doubt you would be able to afford a morgage - would the bank be happy for you to have a morgage when you do not have a job as such?

    Good luck though

  3. I'm sure you have the best of intentions but I would give this serious thought before you make a decision.

Firstly, Carers Allowance is not a lot of money and would in no way be able to cover your outgoings if you were to give up your job.

Secondly, you need to ask yourself just how much responsibility you are willing to take on for your cousin.

You have stated that she is attending a day centre, I guess this means she spends the vast majority of the day there.

Will you be able to provide for her needs if you decide to be her carer? You would be with her for most of the day and  depending on what her special needs actually are, this could be very demanding.

Maybe it's worth looking into the other options that could be available to her before you and your aunt come to a decision.

I hope it works out for you all.

  4. Firstly if you are talking about being a care assistant, you would be employed by a company who would dictate who you looked after.

If youre talking about carers allowance - your cousin has to be on disability living allowance (high care rate i think) and you would get about £48  a week. You can work but you can only earn about £75 a week. Carers are not very highly valued by the government.

  5. Try this link http://www.dwp.gov.uk/.

Also also local Citizens Advice Centre

  6. Nurses Aid in the US start at about $8-$12 per hour--non medical aids get about a dollar less per hour...

  7. A carer can get around £43 per week from the state.

You should also look into D.L.A payments .Disability Living Allowance
