I tried looking online to see the procedures but I couldn't find any help. I'm leaving from Orange County to San Francisco tomorrow, and I was wondering if anyone had any answers. Thanks! I greatly appreciate it.

  1. It would be best to contact your airline as they each have their own set of rules/costs for over size/over weight items.

  2. For most airlines, it needs to be boxed, in at least heavy cardboard securely taped (some require the pedals to be removed).

Plus, there is a fee charged by almost all airlines, definitely those flying from southern to northern California.  Depending on the airline, it can run from $80 to $120.  You may also need to sign a waiver of liability form.

Scroll down to see requirements for a large amount of airlines:

  3. you'll have to call the airline a head of time and let them know (make sure they have enough room for it).  You will have to pay extra to ship it, should be charged by weight.  Call the airline to find out exactly what charges they have

  4. The John Wayne / OC Airport is a really small one.... I;m sure you can ask the airline directly how much you'll need to pay for the bike...

I'll suggest you remove the tires and cover your bike with brown paper and duct tape.
