I have an incompetent cervix and was told not to have intercourse when I was 10 weeks. I didn't ask the specific reason. I have read that sperm can make you contract as well as o****m. Just wondering if anyone has been told the same thing and if their doc told them the specific reason(s)

  1. the cervix is the one that maintains the fetus until you reach your term..your doc advice you not to have intercourse because it could stimulate the uterus to contract and because you have incompetent cervix it could not stand the contraction and may lead to the abortion of the fetus...just follow the advices of your physician and have frequent visit to your ob...

  2. If you have an incompetent cervix, it means it's quite short (ie. less than 2.5cm - a normal cervix in pregnancy is around 4cm). Have intercourse can compromise a cervix that's really only just hanging in there so it's best to be avoided at all costs. As the baby gets bigger, you will either need a stitch placed in the cervix to keep it closed or you will be told to lie in bed all day, every day until the baby is born. The more the baby weighs, the higher the chance the cervix will give way and you'll go into premature labour. This is a scary time and it's really not worth taking any unnecessary risks if you want a healthy baby that goes full term. Good luck and take it easy as much as possible. Follow your doctors exact instructions!

  3. During pregnancy, as the baby grows and gets heavier, it presses on the cervix. This pressure may cause the cervix to start to open before

    My friend had his years ago and she had to have her cervix tied shut so she wouldn't miscarry her third child.   The cervix is too weak to hold the child.    Talk to your doctor about this..you need to know everything you can about it.

    Good luck...

    Incompetent cervix or weakened cervix, and it may lead to a miscarriage or premature delivery. However, an incompetent cervix happens in only about 1 out of 100 pregnancies.

    What causes an incompetent or weakened cervix?

    A weakened cervix can be caused by one or more of the following conditions:

        * Previous surgery on the cervix

        * Damage during a difficult birth

        * Malformed cervix or uterus from a birth defect

        * Previous trauma to the cervix, such as a D&C (dilation and curettage) from a termination or a miscarriage

        * DES (Diethylstilbestrol) exposure

    How will I know if I have an incompetent cervix?

    Incompetent cervix is not routinely checked for during pregnancy and therefore is not usually diagnosed until after a second or third trimester miscarriage has occurred.

    Women can be evaluated before pregnancy, or in early pregnancy by ultrasound, if they have any of the factors that are potential causes of incompetent cervix. Diagnosis can be made by your physician though a pelvic exam or by an ultrasound. The ultrasound would be used to measure the cervical opening or the length of the cervix.

    How often does an incompetent cervix happen?

    An incompetent or weakened cervix happens in about 1-2% of pregnancies. Almost 25% of babies miscarried in the second trimester are due to incompetent cervix.

    What is the treatment for a weakened cervix?

    The treatment for an incompetent or weakened cervix is a procedure that sews the cervix closed to reinforce the weak cervix. This procedure is called a cerclage and is usually performed between week 14-16 of pregnancy. These sutures will be removed between 36-38 weeks to prevent any problems when you go into labor. Removal of the cerclage does not result in spontaneous delivery of the baby. A woman would not be eligible for a cerclage if:

        * There is increased irritation of the cervix

        * The cervix has dilated 4cm

        * Membranes have ruptured

    Possible complications of cervical cerclage include uterine rupture, maternal hemorrhage, bladder rupture, cervical laceration, preterm labor and premature rupture of the membranes. The likelihood of these risks is very minimal, and most health care providers feel that a cerclage is a life saving procedure that is worth the possible risks involved.

  4. well, sperm can ripen the cervix......that is why love making is particularly helpfull, to a woman who might be over due, also a female having an o****m, can help the cervix to contract.......

    but you have what they called an 'incompetent cervix'...this might mean that ..later on in your pregnacy you might need to get a stitch in your cervix.......its quite like, one stitch, that  goes the whole way arod you cervix opening, and is tied of. hopefully it wont come to that....it is quite a common procedure....

    you cerix is weak, is all. but take the docs advise, cos the less 'activity' near your cervix, then the less chance that you might need to have a stitch put in.....

    best of luck to u..ad take it easy :)

  5. I had cervical cancer and had parts of my cervix removed before I was lucky enough to conceive my son through IVF.  Because of the surgery it was suspected that I may have an incompetent cervix and was at very high risk of delivering early.  I was advised no s*x and I think everyone is.  I was never given a reason and I have looked on a few sites but can't find the reason although it seems clear it is a major no no.  So while I am a big one for ask questions and then decide I think just accept not to do it and don't take the risk.  You have the rest of your life to have s*x but may only get one chance for a beautiful baby.  My thought is that they want you to avoid anything at all which may aggravate or disturb the cervix.  Good luck.

  6. this answer is about the bit about not having s*x ... im sure that you have heard about women who want to bring on labour .. they are told to eat currys and have lots of s*x .. the reason for this advice is that sperm contains somthing that helps dialate your cervix .. when you fail to go into labour they give you a pessary called prostin .. this helps to dialte you in order for doctors to be able to rupture membranes .. sperm contains somthign similar so this is why women who ARE trying to go into labour are told to have s*x with there partner and also why women like yourself who are trying to PREVENT labour are told NOT to have s*x.
