  1. Macrocystis porifera is a giant kelp, a type of algae.  The genus Macrocystis reproduces sexually through gametophyte and sporophyte generations.  

    Here's the short version:  a haploid gametophyte makes gametes which fuse to form a diploid sporophyte which makes haploid spores that grow into gametophytes.
