That depends on what you define as 'top'. If you're looking for the all-around best then you're going to be spending about $5000 on something like a Canon 1D.

I'm going to assume that you're looking for a good beginner's dSLR. For this I would suggest going with either Canon or Nikon. Canon has:

Rebel XT

Rebel XSi

EOS 40D

Nikon has:

D40

D70

Alternatively you could go on ebay and look for a Canon Rebel Xti, 20D or 30D.

All of these suggestions will give you a starting point for your research. I suggest you read up on all of these and then go into the store and try out the few that you think you might like.

Well if you mean the absolute best most expensive amazing sweet cameras ever, then you are looking at thousands and thousands of dollars. The Canon 1D Mark III is probably the "best" DSLR on the market.

But if you want to get into the DSLR market for the first time, then I'd suggest something like the Pentax K200D, or you can look at the Nikon D series. The Canon EOS XTi/Xts/etc.  is way overrated and not really a "beginner" camera cause its way more expensive than the K200D. But I think you're looking at stuff better than that because you say "new DSLR".

So basically we'd have to know what camera you already have in order to suggest a new one. It totally depends on where you are at the moment.

But it would be better to have a K200D with lots of great lenses than a Canon 1D Mark III with only one or two so-so lenses. Keep that in mind. It's not all about the camera.
