I've Heard alot of diffrent stories to the origin of my families name and i know everyone with this name is related but i would like to know if anyone has the true story on our history, i have a very old letter passed down through the family in which it states that YEARS ago a priest broke his promise of sellabassy (i dont know if i spelled that right) and the woman had a child, a baby boy, They didnt want anyone to find out and the child was left on the church doorstep and the priest gave him the last name of San Inocencio or saint innocence... i think the origin started in spain and i know in puerto rico theres a whole town of San Inocencios i kust wanted to kno if anyone else has heard this story or how i can find out if this is true

No, you do not "KNOW" that everyone is related. If you are researching your family, nothing is "known" unless there is some record to verify it. Family traditions (letters/ stories) are notorious for being inaccurate, unless they are backed up. This is especially true and common, if you think about what people knew, before they had any way to find out what records really existed, unless they actually travel to the original location.

If you want accurate/ true information, you need to avoid trying to "jump back" 200 years, to verify that, and not work with the in-between. That means, starting with what you can confirm, such as who your own parents are, next, who their parents are, and building from documented information. Only one of your parents has the name, so that is only part of your family history. With 4 grandparents, you will have 4 different names.

You won't accept this until you have some experience... EVERY family has oral traditions, that are passed down. Maybe 1/2 (or more) of those traditions, wind up being incorrect. Standard operating procedure. Using solid research to find documentation.. whatever you find, you will then have proven facts.
