I have a 1918 Ashton Valve Company pressure guage off of a old steam engine. I found the year by looking at the serial number and dating it to when that number was manufactured. However I can not find an estimated value of the item. Any information would be great. Thanks.

  1. Apprearence, quality, brass vs. steel and condition are important factors.  Size generally indicates if it was from a factory steam engine vs. a locomotive,  The factory gauges are usually large and locomotives smaller.  It is however in fact impossible to say unless it is larger than about 5" then it is unlikely  that it is from a locomotive.

  2. If there were a picture I would be able to give a better estimate of the price you could expect on e-bay.  I might be interested in purchasing it, but I need to see clear photos to give a better answer.

  3. A lot of the value depends on (and I'm serious) how pretty it is. If it has a large face/dial, and is brass or nickel plated, it's worth more than stamped steel. They're worth anywhere from $20 to $120. There's still thousands of these gauges around. If there is some type of proof it was from a locomotive, the value is higher. Higher yet if you can document which locomotive. The vast majority of these gauges came from all sizes of stationary steam engines used in factories and farms. Everyone on E-bay claims theirs is from a locomotive though. E-bay is a good place to get a market value for yours, just the same. Type in "Gauges Antique Railroad."
