Personally, it sounds like the author is saying their immortal and have lived so long that time has lost it's meaning. Regular folks mark the passage of time in seconds, minutes,  hours, days, weeks, months, years, etc. Now if you don't have a clock you don't really worry about the first three, you're more looking at the others. But if time becomes irrelevant to you, then days can seem to last for years or years can seem to go by so fast as if to have been a mere day.

The same thing could be said of a prisoner without a way to tell time. Someone locked up where they can't even see the passage of the sun even if that could only be seen through shadows.
