Question:

Does anyone know what's needed to cover a whole on a wood door?

I have a door with a smashed whole, and I want to know what I can use to cover it in a way that is not too noticeable.

This is not my picture, but it shows a door like mine with a similar hole:

The door is not heavy, it looks kind of cheap. The whole is about 7" in diameter.

Please, if someone knows what I can use/buy to repair the problem, post it. I will appreciate it a lot.

Thank you!

  1. you might want to go to the hardware store and buy a box of WOOD FILLER,  it's a powder that you mix water with, then spread on to the door with a putty know or scrapper, let dry for at least a day then put an additional coat on top of the first till it cover a little more than the hole,  now comes the tough part, you have to sand it down till you get a perfect finish, if everything is pretty smooth but there are still some defects, add another coat till you can fill all the holes, let dry and repeat sanding. you'll want to paint over that side of the door or it's going to look like heck.

    don't know of anything better to fill a wood defect with.

    good luck to ya.

  2. A 7" hole is not repairable with spackle or wood putty.  It is too big.

    Better to spend $25 to $35, depending on size.

  3. If this is an exterior door,replace it! You need a solid door on an exterior entrance. A door with hole is an energy waster and not very secure.

    if you really want fix it

    it;s just like the same to fix the closet door

    Most closet doors in mid century to modern homes are hollow. They are made of a lighter weight manufacturer wood or vinyl product. The reason the doors are hollow is to make them easy to install and care for. If a hollow door gets a hole in it, it can be repaired in a few steps. Most doors have a texture, which can be difficult to duplicate but if the hole is in an inconspicuous place, it will be easier to hide.

    Instructions

    Difficulty: Moderately Easy

    Things You’ll Need:

        * Insulating Foam

        * Knife (optional)

        * Plastic or Metal Putty Knives

        * Spackle

        * 220 and 320 Grit Sandpaper

        * Paint

    How to Fix Hole in Closet Door

    Step1

    Fill the hole with expanding insulation foam. Allow the foam to come out of the hole. Let the foam dry completely.

    Step2

    Cut or scrape off the excess foam so it is just a little bit recessed from the door leaving a small dent rather than an open hole.

    Step3

    Fill the now shallow hole with spackle and let it dry.

    Step4

    Sand the spackled area so it is level with the rest of the door.

    Step5

    After the area is sanded and the hole still is not level, repeat steps 3 and 4.

    Step6

    Lightly wipe the area with a damp cloth to remove the residue from sanding and allow it to dry completely.

    Step7

    Paint the area to match the rest of the door.

    Tips & Warnings

        * Make sure you know the material of the door and buy the correct kind of spackle. Ask a sales person at your local hardware store for recommendations.

  4. How about Spackle or wood putty?

  5. For an interior (hollow core) door, it's easiest to peel off the plywood and replace it whole.  It's really fairly simple to do, and leaves no repair marks whatsoever.

  6. these doors are not expensive to replace as new, but if you want to doctor it up....fill this with foam (door and window foam only)

    cut the foam near flush.

    then take the doorknob off and use sticky shelving paper over the door to make it look like a new wooden door.

  7. I would try to  repair it similar to a "hole" in sheetrock.  Get a thin peice of wood (like used in model airplanes) and put a string through it with a knot on one end.  Then tuck it into the "hole"  holding the string with knot on backside and string in your hand. Slide it one way and apply super glue, then slide it the other way and apply some more and pull the string tight to hold the glue against the inside of the door. Cut the string when dry.

    When it is completely dry apply a wood filler over the top of the thin peice of wood.  Then when dry, paint.
