Bobby Sands is most famous not as a poet but as an Irish rebel, a hunger striker who starved himself to death in a British prison.  This poem compares him to persecuted heroes of the past, to people who have suffered and died for just causes.  Those people knew they were right, the poem says, and Bobby knows that he's right.  A web search on "Bobby Sands" and "hunger strike" will turn up lots of information on his life and death.  You can decide for yourself whether you think he was right.
