  1. A popular quality steel for bicycle frames is American SAE 4130 steel, better known as "chrome molybdenum," and referred to as "chromoly" or "chrome-moly."

  2. Its a type of steel alloy, it consists of steel, chromium and molybdenum. Its used for most BMX and jump frames as it is strong. Its better than hi-ten steel for bikes.

  3. Chrome Moly is high strength steel.

OK Mr G.... this sounds like a challenge. I'll bring over a CrMo framed bike of mine next time I'm in the UK and you can ride whatever you want. 3 races- a 20km time trial, a century (100 miles) and a good hilly 50km course. We'll see who wins. If you win I'll let you run over my prize bike with a car and if I win I get to run over yours, then lets see who can repair theirs to riding condition and do the same series again.

  4. As stated by others it's a steel alloy.

But . . . Myself and the great majority of Roadies DO NOT judge a roadbike against steel!!!  Steel bikes are the 'Model-T Fords' of the bike world, if anything people would use Titanium as a comparison, Or even a high end carbon bike.

Steel is a Nice strong material for Touring and old people !

EDIT: Didn't mean to 'Dis' steel - infact having ridden many Aluminium bikes, a good steel one is preferable to Al. (I'm a Carbon Fibre Fan if the truth be known!).

EDIT:  EEEEK! - a high stakes challenge from Mirage!

For the next couple of weeks my e-mail facility will be made available! (Take note!) - Mirage, your preferrence for steel is well documented; However, even YOU! must admit to the validity of the statements I have made when answering this question?

    .

  5. Steel.  It's an alloy with chromium and molybdenum.

One site claims "The predecessors to today's Cr-mo frames were first produced in the 50's. Technology has not changed much since then, and the ride of a Cr-mo frame is still the standard by which all other bicycle frames are judged. Cr-mo can be described in general terms as lively, solid, and predictable. Cr-mo's durability and tunability make it a favourite of many cyclists."
