Does anyone know what I have to do to home school my daughter?

She is being bullied at school- one girl is making fin of her very much in style clothing and talks about her and laughs and points and she has been totally singled out at lunch- she has to sit with her class and the girls all have excuses why she can't sit there including sitting their instrument for band in the seat next to them- she has been forced to sit at the boys table where they even refuse to talk to her. This has gone on too long- she is getting depressed and crying daily over it. I feel this is the only option and I need to know what to do to get started. Thanks.

  1. I would just say buy all the books, and if you would like to home school her yourself as in like you would be her teacher then send a letter to the state and school maybe or something along those lines, but I'm not really sure, but I think that is what you have to do.

  2. Visit http://www.nhen.org/leginfo/state_list.a... to find out what your states laws regarding homeschooling are. Homeschooling is legal everywhere in North america but each state and province have their own regulations.

Pull her as fast as possible (this is a mental health issue!!) and, if possible, worry about curriculum and the like later. She needs time to rest and heal anyway so use that time to reconnect with her and to research homeschooling.

Check out http://www.nhen.org/ and http://homeschooling.gomilpitas.com/ to start researching. Read homeschooling blogs and message boards. Look for email lists from your state that you can join.

So 1) Get her out as fast as you can while complying with state regulations.

    2) let her rest and have a break.

    3) Read, read, read.

  3. My heart goes out to you!

Visit www.hslda.org for the legal requirements of your state. In Florida I know that you have to send a letter of intent and then you have to have her tested with a standardized test of your choosing each year. We use the IOWA test.

Don't rush into a curriculum, there are a lot out there, take your time. She may need a bit of "deschooling"  anyway.  Give her some time to get back on her feet and regain some confidence. You will be able to "catch up" as you will be covering more material faster than the public schools.

Try and find a home school group in your area. Call local churches or the library. They usually can refer you to one. I know we have inquires all the time and I enjoy helping getting new homeschoolers started.

Good luck! Feel free to email.

  4. You have to find out your local laws, rules and regulations and complete those procedures which can, in some instance, have date limitations for filing.

Once you do that and qualify you need only select a homeschool program that is acceptable to either the state or your needs, depending on laws.

In CA it has to be accredited.  In NY it has to follow the state ordered syllubus.  In Texas it just has to cover the basic groups of math, history, english and science with no specific requirements.
