I'm 16 and I'm joining the Army in May, as soon as I turn 17. I want to know a little more about other careers, but I'm really interested in being a linguist. And hey, if a recruiter could answer, that'd be great!! I just need to know a little more.

  1. www.goarmy.com

  2. Yeah, your best bet is to check out the goarmy.com website. Go to the Jobs/careers dropdown and click on the intelligence field. You will have to score pretty high on the ASVAB and then take what we call the DLAB, which just sees if you would be able to learn a new language. If you already are efficient at a foreign language you can earn extra money while doing any job in the army. You will just have to be tested on it. What you are looking for would probably fall under the 35 series, ie (35P).

  3. The main MOS for joining as a Linguist is 35W, which is basically a language trainee.

You then turn into a 35N or 35P.  (you can look those up on GoArmy.com)

You may also get language training if you join as a 37F, 35M, or 35N.

If you really want to be a linguist, you need to make sure you have a good grasp of English Grammar, it is key to passing the Defense Language Aptitude Battery, the test the Army gives to see if you can be a Linguist.

Also, if you can still fit it into your class schedule, take a foreign language class.  It will help you get used to the idea of how foreign languages work, and get you the disciple for learning vocabulary.

Try to get your recruiter to find a linguist for you to talk to, so you know what you are getting yourself into.

Linguist is a great job in the Army.  I recommend it.
