  1. Yes

the V stands for "fixed wing"

    the F stands for "fighter"

the A stands for "attack" or bomber

So the F/A (fighter/attack)-18 is identified by the acronym VFA

all USN F18 squadrons are VFA-(number)

all USMC F18 squadrons are VMFA-(number)

  2. V designates fixed wing as opposed to H for rotary wing (helicopters). It is the letter V only because the letter resembles the shape of a fixed wing. F is Fighter. A is attack. So the letters literally mean "fixed wing fighter attack squadron". But in practice VFA squadrons are known as Strike Fighter Squadrons. Currently they fly the F/A-18 Hornet variants.

  3. Strike Fighter Squadron (US Navy),   V is the designation for fixed wing aircraft squadrons, H is for rotary wing.
