Does anyone know what all the building work is between new cross gate and london bridge is ?

It is the East London Line Extension.  It will go all the way from New Cross Gate to West Croydon and Crystal Palace.  It is due to be finished in 2010.

My own pet theory first . . . .

The road bridge at New Cross Gate - it's one big problem bridge which dates from c1840s-1850s and was built originally to support the weight of the occasional horse-drawn goods waggon of the period, which at most would have weighed in at about ten tons - hay carts enroute to London etc.
