  1. It depends on the insurance company and the state you live in. Some companies don't allow it at all, unless mandated by your state.

    For example BCBS in VA lays it out this way.

    To be eligible for coverage as a domestic partner, you:

    Must have been living together six or more months and plan to continue living together;

    • Are financially inter-dependent;

    • Are at least 18 years old; and

    • Are not married to anyone else and are not related by blood in a way that would prohibit marriage.


  2. It depends on what the insurance laws are in your state and what specific plan is offered by the company your employer buys their insurance through.

    In other words, we can't tell you. Only the HR people at your company, or an authorized representative of their insurance provider, can answer that question for you.

  3. Its very touchy and hard so you will have to really do some investigation on it.

  4. It's going to vary by state.  I'd suggest your HR department is a good place to start, or "Florida domestic partner laws" as a search engine criteria.

    MOST states, you can't add a domestic partner to your health insurance - you have to be married to them.
