Does anyone know what causes a person to have a tongue that is marked with dark stripes on either side?

I forgot when this happened i think it was around 1993. My dentist asked what my nationality was. When i told him, he said it wasn't because of that. This is now driving me crazy, no one seems to know what this is. Please help. thank you. grateful for any thought
