I AM A MOM WITH MODERATE ADHD AND HAVE NOTICED THAT MY 5 YEAR OLD SON IS EASILY DISTRACTED, LIKE I WAS AT HIS AGE, DURING STUDY TIME. SO I BOUGHT HIM A LITTLE WOODEN DESK AND AM GOING TO PAINT IT FOR HIM AND PUT IT IN A QUIET CORNER OF OUR OFFICE IN ORDER TO ELIMINATE SOME OF THE DISTRACTIONS HE DEALS WITH IN OUR CURRENT STUDY LOCATION. I WAS WONDERING IF THERE WAS A CERTAIN COLOR OR COMBO OF COLORS I COULD PAINT THE DESK WITH IN ORDER TO CALM HIS MIND AND HELP HIM TO FOCUS. ANY PSYCHOLOGISTS,PSYCHIATRISTS, TEACHERS OUT THERE WHO MIGHT KNOW?

  1. There is evidence that shows that soothing pale blues and greens can help create a calming environment, so I aim to decorate my classroom in these tones.  There's also evidence that bright colors like yellow and Orange can be over stimulating so I avoid those. good luck!

  2. sorry really wish i could help, good luck

  3. There are no particular colors that are proven by research to be better than others for ADHD. There is research to show that young children tend to gravitate to bright colors and reject black and white.

I think you should let your child pick the color and then use the hue in that color that is the least stimulating. Even if it is red for instance, you can choose to paint brick red, which is a less stimulating hue than bright red. If the child picks the colors, he is more likely to want to be in the spot.

  4. As a woman who was diagnosed with ADD at the age of five, let me assure you that the color of the desk will do very little to change your son's ADD. I really wish it were that simple. Go ahead and paint the desk a simple blue or green stain, but don't expect fo him to be able to sit there.

The best thing you can do is teach him the steps of organization and cleaning from an early age. I have a lot of trouble keeping my appartment clean, and when I was younger my room or anywhere I was working was usually a mess in a matter of minutes. My mind does work better in an area with less clutter, but it is very, very hard for me to make a space with less clutter because of my habits. I really wish my mom would have worked with me and showed me how to clean, declutter, and organize at an early age. I think it would be very beneficial to work on some of those goals with your son in age appropriate ways.
