Does anyone know what currency £ stands for?

I'm attemping to buy some items off the internet, but, the prices are in £. I Don't know what that means. The items are £69.95 and £49.95. I do have a conversion site, but I need to know what the £ stands for. I would love the conversion, but only need what the £ stands for. Thank You.

  2. it stands for the British pound. This is the Euro symbol, €, its based on the greek character epsilon which only has one dash going across the middle.

    EDIT:  I just came across the conversion.  Right now, £69.95 is about $138 and the £49.95 is about $98.  I used the Yahoo currency converter.
