  1. You need to do a lot of aerobic exercise.  Barrel racing takes lots of oxygen, and I often find myself panting after a run if I'm not in shape.  Riding an exercise bike is great.

Then, some weight training would probably help.  Do lots of repetitions at low weights, rather than lifting big weights.

Focus on whatever muscle groups you find lacking when you ride.

You can get in better shape this way than just riding, as you can isolate your weaknesses and work on them all those times you can't be on the horse.

Don't neglect your diet.  If you're too thin and want to bulk up, eat more, especially protein.  If you're a little bigger than you want for racing, cut down on the calories and do non-aerobic bike riding - going slower will burn more calories but not exercise your hear/lung capacity.

And of course, however much time you spend on a horse is good.  Don't just sit there; do exercises as well.

    Hope this helps.

  2. Yea ,, learn how to ride with no stirrups at the walk trot and canter and run,,with out HANDS,,,,!!!!!!!!1&&&

with out bouncing around on his back,, and hanging on for dear life !!!!  learn more about riding correctly ,,Then just barrels , take lessons in a different trainers that do NOT train barrels horses ,, You will learn soo much more, then from a barrel racer,,

take lessons from a reining trainer or a western riding ( stock horse,,work like cattle etc)

You have to learn your leads balance and timing etc

Just be better then the others and gain as much knowledge as you can before you run ,,

BELIEVE ME YOU WILL BE FIT TO RIDE A RACE HORSE,,

    Good luck

  3. Yourself or the horse?

The most obvious answer would be to ride your horse and practice.

It doesn't take too much to condition yourself because if you ride daily then you have kind of already done that. but probably just exersicizing a few times a week and work on balance and centering yourself because it does transfer over to your riding balance.  Take a yoga class. lol
