going to India in September and read the State Department report and it sounds *bad* so I probably won't go, but wondered if anyone had been there since the Maoist thing?

  1. If you are willing to go to Nepal while visiting India, then you may not have to drop your plan. State department notice is there since a long time and it is not bad as they have listed. Even in the extreme fights between Maoists and army, it didn't target tourists very much. In ten years of conflict, there were very few cases where tourists were affected.

Now, the situation has already changed. Maoist participated in national election and are in parliament as a large party. They will be in the government very soon. I hope they will not act as they were when in jungle or not in government. Hence, you don't have to worry if you are visiting Nepal.

  2. things were bad one never knows what can happen let things cool down then plan yur visit.Maoists are terrorists who were wanting to gain control which they have managed so as they are new to the ruling of the country there can be unforseen problems so postpone yur visit

  3. As mentioned in the previous post, the situation is normal at the moment and it is expected to remain normal for some time being. As Maoists are the largest party in the constituent assembly and the biggest bloc in the soon to be formed government, they will be the last one to affect the tourists. Use the state department's advisories but always confirm about those advisories in the public forum like these one so that you will get the first hand information from people who are/have been here rather than the information of a bureaucrat sitting inside the fortified building.
