Does anyone know what materials were schoolhouses made of in 1888?

I just need the main materials, especially what the roof is made of as I'm writing a story.

roof, generally slate, brick and or wood for main part.

it would depend on where the school house was located.  for example, the east coast might differ from the west coast.
