Does anyone know what novel has a glowing castle in it? It was published before 1999.?

From what I can remember, it starts out with a kid who had telepathy (or some mind ability) and he was bending forks or throwing forks at school with his mind. He got in trouble for something and was kicked out. His mother (the narrator) takes him to see his father. The father lives in a castle. At this point the castle is lit up by light and looks like it is glowing (its for a party I think). ---- and then somehow the father has the same abilities as the son, and it was some kind of romance novel --- thats all I can remember...

Any ideas?
