  1. TV Tech is exactly right for ATSC broadcasts from your local channels if you receive them from and antenna. They all broadcast 8 bit vestigial sideband signals at a maximum of 6mhz.

If you are on cable, satellite, at&t quasi fiber or fios, your signal is coming across to your box using quadriture amplitude mondulation and the signals are compressed using mpeg4 or h264. This method delivers a "softer" picture to your set than ATSC.

If you want the best posible picture, connect a good antenna and point it to your broadcasters. Weingard makes great antennas.

  2. They aren't paying for more bandwidth.....

The FCC allocates a 6 Mhz bandwidth on all TV channels....period.

And it's up to the TV station to make the best use of that alloted bandwidth.....

So, some are taking advantage of the fact that a DIGITAL signal can utilize ONE HD channel and up to 3 different Sub-channels !

All those channels FIT inside that 6 Mhz bandwidth, so if some stations are using ALL FOUR channels, they are utilizing the maximum bandwidth available to them on their alloted channel.....

While others only have enough entertainment to utilize ONE HD channel and one SD sub-channel.....

They pay for the same bandwidth as everyone else does in the TV industry....

How they use it is their choice.....

  3. I haven't heard that.  Are they paying the cable companies?  Satellite?

As far as cable, here is an interesting chart showing how FIOS gives more bandwidth, and Comcast is doing more compression.

This is because comcast is still using wire, and FIOS is optical.  You can put a LOT more signal into fiber optic.

HD channel line ups on the different providers
