  1. According to my Japanese wife, it is a Japanese surname. Just a name, with no particular meaning.

  2. My husband's Japanese, and he says he's never heard of this name.

What was the context? Similar sounding "Ii datte" could mean "He/she says it's ok."

  3. 伊達 was from  ÃƒÂ¥Ã‚›Â Ã©ÂÂ” both called Idate originally.

伊達 had been changed its pronounciation from Idate to date around since Meiji era beginning,  about 150 years ago.

因達 was after 伊太氏 Itashi, clan of Ita. very old clan which was rooted 1800 years ago or more older.

  4. Idate is an older form of the family name Date, and it started to get corrupted to Date around the 15th century. The name comes from Idate (now Date) county in what was Mutsu province. It's approximately in today's Fukushima prefecture. In fact, there still is a Date county in Fukushima prefecture.

You can learn more about Idate and Date by reading up on various Date family histories. The most famous of the Dates probably is the 16th-17th century warlord Date Masamune (good chance he called himself Idate and not Date).

Masamune was known for his flamboyant fashion. Hence even today, someone fashionable is called a Date (not Idate).

A completely unrelated name is Idaten. That would refer to someone who's fast on their feet. It's a Japanese folk counterpart to Mercury.
