  1. If your car doesn't ping (pre-detonate) on regular gas you don't need premium fuel.  It would be a waste of money and will NOT increase mileage or power.  Premium fuel is only needed in high compression and engines with more ignition advance to stop pre-detonation and engine damage.

  2. Premium unleaded is 20 to 30 cents more expensive than regular so figuring $2.90 per gallon it will cost an additional  6.9 to 10.3% more. Not chump change if you drive a lot.

The average car will get no better gas milage or power using premium as it only helps in high performance engines to prevent knocking.

  3. it's been shown to be a myth, reg unleaded works just as well in 99.9 % of vehicles, car mfgs call for hih dollar gas for PERFORMANCE and to get the advertised gas mileage, but you will never get the window sticker mpg anyway. If you want to find out, run a couple tanks on regular gas and a couple on high octane gas, see what the difference is. You will find the difference is in you checking account not your mpg (as long as you keep the same driving habits or patterns). You could always get a can of octane boost from a parts store and test it if you have a built in MPG device, run 1/2 tank reg, put in the correct amount of octane booster and reset the mpg and run the other 1/2 see what you get.

  4. Regular and Premium does not give you a different fuel economoy. Premium averages around twenty cents more than regular so you can figure that into your price comparrison. A twelve gallon tank will cost $36 at $3 per gallon. The same size tank with premium will cost $38.40. If you are trying to decide what type car to get consider this. Most cars that require premium are meant for speed so if that is what you want and you think its worth the extra cost then go for it. But there are plenty of cars with just regular gas engines that are plenty fast enough. If you already have a car you have to use the type fuel that the manufacturer requires. The engine is designed to run on that type fuel.
