Does anyone know what the rights of a biological grandparent would be for an adopted child in AZ?

We live in AZ. We recently completed an adoption. The grandparents are claiming that although the parents rights were severed, that they still have rights to the children? While the family knows how to contact us, this is not considered an open adoption and we are not obligated to remain in contact with the family.

the grandparents have no rights. if these children were legally adopted by you, you are the only one who has any rights to them. you are their parent know, it is up to you to do what is best for them.

The biological grandparents have no legal rights to the child once the adoption is completed.  They may have been able to challenge for custody prior to the adoption being finalized but they have no standing for visitation after it has been finalized.

You are the parents, it is your decision if it is best for the child to have contact or not to have contact at this point in time.

Sadly, the biological grandparents have nothing to stand on.  But be the better person and at least allow them contact.  It will benefit the child in the long run.  If the child will grow up knowing they are adopted, having some contact with their natural family will make things MUCH easier.

Having contact is not in the child's best interest?  Are you sure it is not in YOUR best interest.

In our state, grandparents have no rights in the case of a legal adoption. Relax and talk to your attorney, they will be able to tell you what is correct.

I commend you for being an adoptive parent! What a joy it will be. I know right now it may not seem like it, but once this passes you will be fine! God bless!

I think that the as long as the parent's rights were severed then the grandparents have no legal right especially if this isn't an open adoption. If I were you I would contact a family law attorney to verify that, and then get  ideas of how to stop this. Good luck.

No, the right to the child significantly drops once both parents sign the papers to have him/her adopted.  Grandparents do not really have a leg to stand on in court with custody cases, especially because the child was legally adopted.  The grandparents are making silly threats and should have thought to take in the child before the adoption occurred.  But just in case you should consult a lawyer, to be sure they can't come after you.  Adoption is already a stressful process, I can't believe they are doing this to you! Grandparents have no rights to their grandchildren. At least in California thats the case.

The biological grandparents are kidding themselves they have no rights to this child since the biological parents signed their rights away.  If these grandparents feel they have rights when they don’t, they could possible try and kidnap the child, it does happen.  

Very mature Vampire Claudia as said anyone can give you a thumbs down you have no way of knowing what the original poster gave you. Perhaps you shouldnt be so quick to judge since you dont know the entire situation, and why contact with the bio family has been ill-advised.

If the parents willingly and lawfuly  adopted their child out to you then you should be safe. Unless the grandparents hire an expensive lawyer, the parents have the right to adopt out their children and the grandparents should have stepped forward before the adoption was final. I would call a lawyer and talk to him though just to be sure and on the safe side. Good Luck

The biological grandparent has NO RIGHTS once the adoption is finalized.  It's up to you to decide what contact you may choose to have with them, and none at all if you choose that as well.
