Question:

Does anyone know what to charge to waitress a private party?

The party includes serving, clearing the table, washing dishes, and putting the dishes away. It's a one man show. I am going to require a 5hr minimum but am unsure how much to charge for an hourly basis and gratuity. I have some figures but would like to see what others think and/or if others have done this before. Also, gratuity, is that gratuity on what I charge?

For example: Say I charge $40hr plus 20% gratuity, is it 20% of my pay?

  1. I would maybe just ask for a total amount. I bar-tended at a private party and was there for about six hours and they paid me $200.00. I didn't really do much but set up a little bar and just stand there and make drinks. It was also for a guy that I knew that is regular at the restaurant that I work at. They didn't even let me clean up that much afterward. If you are going to be doing more then I would ask for maybe $300.00 to $350.00. Gratuity is usually given by the guests at the party. The host might throw you some extra at the end of the night, but usually they want a set amount to pay you at the end of night.

  2. I think it really depends on how many people will be at the party.  There's a big difference between waiting on 6 people and 50 people.  I also disagree that you should expect your guests to top.  I think the host tips.

Without knowing where you are and the cost of living in your city, I would say $30 an hour, plus tip.
