  1. First, you'd need to determine the immigration status of the child and the father. It's possible that the child is a U.S. citizen through the mother, if she met the residency requirements prior to the baby's birth.

If the child is not a U.S. citizen, and the father is a lawful permanent resident, the child should have been grant permanent resident status at the time of his/her first entry if that entry occurred before his/her 2nd birthday.

Once you figure out if the child is an alien or a citizen, then you'll be able to get the right documents to obtain a S.S. card. It's important to know whether in or out of wedlock. It's important to know how much time the mother lived in the U.S. before the child was born.

  2. When the child was born, you should have registered him w/ the US consulate.  I'm assuming you didn't get a passport to bring him to the US (the Canadian border used to be a little less stringent on these requirements).

My suggestion would be to take proof of the mother's citizenship and the child's birth certificate to the Social Security office and ask them.

  3. you must have them become a us citizen first. it is not automatic. www.state.gov see citizenship you will have to contact them and deal with them call the fed operator for the no.  1800 fed info.

  4. The American-citizen parent should have registered birth to a US citizen while abroad at the nearest US consulate in Canada.  Assuming you failed to do this, you need to take baby to the nearest Social Security office with your birth certificate and passport (you have to prove you are a US citizen and were a US citizen at the time baby was born, and you need to prove this baby is really your baby), the baby's long-form birth certificate, hospital records, etc.  Apply for a Social Security card.

Also get a US passport for the child, and always keep it up to date!

  5. You will need to file for a Consular Report of Birth Abroad for the child.  Ideally, this should have been done in Canada but there are still ways to apply at this point. Go to this webpage to see what you need to have for documentation and how to apply.

The CRBA will show proof of the child's US citizenship and then you will be able to apply for a SSN.
