So sometimes we go out to melbourne airport and we watch the planes land and take off, we sit on operations rd which is at the end of runway 34 because when the planes land/take off this is the closest you can get to them. The problem is everytime we go they are rarely departing/arriving at this end and it is a waiste of time going. Does anyone know when the best time to go? Or where i could find out when planes are landing at specific runways?

Thanks

  1. the runway in use for landing and taking off depends on the wind direction, probably you always see it in the same stage of the year in wich the winds comes from the south. choose another...bye.

  2. only when the wind direction is       north     north east       north west       or    calm   wind         otherwise landings are acomplished using runway 160

  3. Before going out ,check the weather to determine the direction the wind is coming from. Airplanes takeoff and land into the wind. If the wind is coming from a southerly direction ,they will be using the opposite end (runway 16)

  4. unfortunately the best time to see landings on rwy 34 is during the wee small hours of the morning because that is when the wind favours that runway. as you know rwy 34 only has a VOR approach wherease rwy 16 has an ILS which is why 16 is favoured.

  5. Get the flight schedules so you know what airplane if there is come on a specific time. I remember they have airport closure when i was there.

  6. The simple answer is when the winds favour it.

Generally, you want the wind coming down the runway at you when taking off or landing.

So, if the winds are out of the north (blowing to the south) you should get the best view from Operations road.

  7. Perhaps you could buy a radio and tune into the tower frequency and gauge when the busiest times are.

Another option is to go check Qantas' arrival schedules. http://www.qantas.com.au/flightinfo/do/d...

Since 34 is the longest runway, it will probably be used the most, unless the wind is favoring another.

Here's another website, maybe you already found it...
