I thought it was introduced in Chicago to alleviate some of the sales lost to Catholics staying away from red meat on Fridays.

Yes, in 1963 in Cincinnati.  

EDIT: To the person below me, it was introduced for the reason you specified, except in Cincinnati.  This was done because Bob's Big Boy had a fish sandwich, and McDonalds did not, so Catholics ate there on Fridays instead.

well i started going McDonalds in high school in 1974 and they already had them! Big mac introduced in 1975 i think!go on Mcds website punch up history it's kinda interesting!
