  1. Hi Ian!

The next solar eclipse of any kind you could see in southern california will be the deep partial eclipse of May 20, 2012.  About 85% of the solar disc will be covered in Los Angeles, with increasingly more as you go north.  Beyond a line from Lake Tahoe to Punta Garda, you'll see an annular eclipse, where the moon moves completely over the sun but is too small to totally eclipse it.

You definitely should travel to Oregon for the August 21, 2017 total solar eclipse.  The next time totality can be seen in California will not be until August 12, 2045, and that only along the far northern tier of the state.  The next total eclipse of the sun in southern CA will not be until May 3, 2106.

  2. On August 21, 2017 there will be a total eclipse visible in the US but is will cross the west coast in northern Washington or southern Canada.

On April 8, 2024 there will be a total eclipse visible in the US but it will cross the west coast in Mexico  and travel north through the Midwest.

  3. The closest you (and me ...I live in S. Calif) are going to get is a partial eclipse in Northern CA on May 20,2012.

Theres a total eclipse in Northern Oregon on Aug. 21, 2017.

Heres a web site with great maps and dates http://eclipse.gsfc.nasa.gov/SEatlas/SEa...
