I want to buy a new white American style fridge freezer for about £500 to £600. However, all the ones in Currys and Comet seem to be silver or black. I particularly like the Samsung model they did in white a few months ago, but can't seem to find it anywhere now. Thanks.

  1. you want a smeg, john lewis do a good range, they come in ivory though, not white exactly

  2. Why don't you try looking on some American sites & have it shipped over. You will spend a lot less than you think as our money is c**p right now. Why dont you try a store called SEARS? Go into the appliance section & you can find one.

EDIT- Here is a link. There are white ones too, but  stainless steel is the new look, so that may be why you are finding trouble.

    http://www.sears.com/shc/s/c_10153_12605...

And remember 500 to 600 pounds is $1000 to $1200 here.

Ps. You have to click on "more products" to veiw different types of fridegerators. They have a lot. Good luck.

  3. Smeg do one in white and cream, but they might be a bit more expensive x

  4. It is possible that you can obtain different finishes on special order.

I would try John Lewis's (contact info at www.johnlewsis.com) and see if they can order a white model for you. It is possible to get replacement trim to change the colour too. Have you rang Samsung to ask (0845 7267864) with the model number of your prospective purchase to see what is available? Don't just depend on what Currys or Comet want to sell you.

I would not recommend ordering from the US as per a previous poster. Apart from the initial cost, you would have to pay for shipping (as much as a few hundred pounds because of the weight) and also customs duty & VAT would be payable in addition to the retailer's price.

The voltage is wrong and you would need a transformer (type depends on how much current is drawn), which is not one of those adaptor like plugs from Maplins that cost £10. The mains frequency (60Hz as against 50Hz) would also mean the motor would not run properly, even if you sorted out the voltage issues.

Technical standards are also different in the US for electrical items and it may be it would not meet UK/EU regulations. This is just like US spec cars which are not legal to drive in the UK until they have had lights, reflectors etc changed to meet our safety standards.

As the model is not sold in the UK, you would not be able to obtain servicing/spares easily and cheaply.

Best buy a UK spec one and save yourself a lot of hassle.

Lastly, I'd also check out the electricity consumption: those US style fridges can use a h**l of a lot compared to a more conventionally sized one.
