I would like to either buy one or a ready to essemble kit . How big of a windmill would I need to provide enough electricity for a 7 room house with full basement. I want to use it to provide all the power including heat in the winter.

  1. amsterdam or scottland

  2. The average power requirement for an American house is about a kilowatt. I'm not sure about heating using electricity - there's far more efficient ways of heating your home, like putting in a solar heater. Electric heating is just not the way to go. So ignoring that, let's say you want to find a 5-kw generator windmill, to give yourself some generous leeway (which you'll need, for low-wind days). You can get a list of manufacturers here:

These are pricey! They can cost up to about $20,000.

  4. It's going to cost more than a few bucks. Here's one site that has a nice overview of what you'll need and what it might cost.

You'll also have to plan on a way of storing energy for use when the wind isn't blowing.

  5. Depending on where you live, having such a windmill will probably violate the zoning ordinances.

  6. Simply put, it is not economically feasible.

for average home electricity usage, see:

For a southern climate 1600 square foot home, you are looking at about 20,000 kilowatt-hours of energy.

Energy is measured in kilowatt-hours, not kilowatts.

The wind doesn't blow all the time, storage of electricity is difficult and expensive, maintenance of your windmill is not free, etc.

You could buy one as a novelty.
