2nd grade? She got very good grades in reading in 1st grade but I am noticing that there are several words that she does not know when she is reading material that is age appropriate. I would like to find a list of words that she needs to know for the second grade so that she is not behind. We live in the state of Missouri, if that makes a difference. Thanks.

  1. here are some flash cards with common site words for the second grade...you can print them and cut them up for her.

Here are a list of words I found that are the most common site words..they are divided up for beginning the school year (probably mostly words she knew from the end of 1st grade) to words that should be known by the end of the year.

  2. speak with her teacher -they are the best resources!!

  3. i just typed in second grade grammar in the search engine and this is what came up.. maybe it will help..

    the first is fun..

  4. Ask the school that she goes to and I'm they have something, that is probably your best bet.

  5. Have her to read over the summer. You should ask her teacher for the next school year. Each teacher and school and district are different. I had my son in a school one year that gave him what I would have thought to be big words for his age and the next year in a different school they gave him baby words. Use the internet and google "2nd grade vocabulary" create your own list and give your child a word for the day. Each day she gets a word and the definition. She practices it all day and gets a small quiz at the end of the week. If she does well then give her a treat. My kids are in the U City district currently and we will be in Clayton next year.

  6. Phonics has been banned in schools- but it really is necessary I think.  Get her hooked on phonics, and study with her ever y week.

  7. Dolch words are the most common words used in the English language and are often used by teachers to introduce sight words (although I am instead a fan of intensive phonics instead of a whole language approach).

With that said, I must agree with others that just reading, reading, reading will help her along.

  8. I would call the school she will be going to and ask them since they will know what material they will be using. Im sure they would be glad to help you.
