  1. Do you live near a beach? Dig down until you you see a swirly layer of black.  Take some home and dry it out.  Chances are most of the black sand grains are magnetite.

Do you really need magnetite sand or iron filings?

  2. The best and easiest is river sand.  Ocean beach sand usually has a bit less then river sand, a result of the constant wave action breaking it up and moving it out.

Get a few shovels full of sand from the inside edge of a curve, which is were the denser grains are usually deposited and concentrated.  You can very quickly pan off most of the lower density sand grains.  (You do not have to be too good at this but practice helps.)  The remaining fraction should get darker as the magnetite and other denser particle concentrate.  Use a magnet to pick out the magnetite.  Do this until you have enough for you experiment.

  3. look in the yellow pages or ring directory enquiries and find the closest magnetite sand shop obviously !!

  4. Difficult to say as you could be anywhere in the world. I know that the sand from North beach, Scarborough has magnetite in it, I would expect that sand mainly derived from corals for example would have little magnetite in it.
