Please listen to the vegetarian who is telling you not to do this.  Dogs are primarily carnivores, they need meat to thrive.  Please don't torture your pet for your personal moral issue.  Cats will actually die on a vegetarian diet.

Direct answer to your question on sources/recipes:

1. TheCelestialshop.com....she offers a wonderful dry pure veretarian product. Highly recommended  by me and my Husky. Perfectly balanced recipe.

2. A Yahoo/Google search for Vegetarian Dog food./recipeies Many different concepts on what "vegetarian" means. To most it means no meat as the primary ingredient but yes to animal by-products as a source of nutritional additives. Not really necessary in my experience. I use a brand of moist called "PETGUARD VEGETARIAN FEAST". I get it at the health food store in town. I use it sparinly because the manufactorery has not responded to my questions on the source of the additives, slaughtered animal or grain sources.

3. Your own grocery store and kitchen. My dog loves Chick peas. (garbonzos) $0.63 per can at WalMart. All vegetarian and freshest I have found. My Husky likes them mushed up with veretarian cheese, diced fresh tomatores or freash corn.

4. Fresh corn on the cobb, watermelon. (etc)

5. Bake him homemade bread. I have a $40.00 bread machine that has been making fresh homemade bread for my dog for years now. I buy additive free grains/flours (

Bob's Red Mill brand) from the grocery store (on line too) and make my bread. My Husky loves almond flour, 10 grain mix, oat flours, whole wheat, corn meal, soy, brown rice flour in his bread. Regular baking yeast to raise the bread a little and a vegetable oil and water. He loves it! Especailly the crusts. I make him a hearty thick moist loaf, not  a floofy loaf as for humans.My Husky eats three loafs a week.

6. Egg free, additive free  pastas. I can put these types of pasta over anything and he loves it. WalMart is a great source for additive free pastas. Heartland brand.

Now, a word about the benefits of vegetarian animal food. I speak from experience owning and raising both a cat and a dog on vegetarian food. Pets do very very well on vegetarian food. I have had sooooooo many "experts, vets etc." tell me I will harm my dog or kill my dog Yak Yak Yak. I would put my dog against any meat eating animal and challenge them on overall long term health and personality.  It is a rather myopic and selfish concept to think that killing a cow is a necessary choice to feed my dog. (But who has conquered their own mind) One of the first things people note about my animals is how great they look , happy they are and almost human and loving they are. Then when I tell them my animals are vegetarian they tell me how wrong I am!   Vets keep telling me my dog has to be years younger than I say because his teeth are still so white and his breath so fresh like a puppy. Hes an adult! Don't look for support from the "experts" they are still in the illusion of their own mind sets, and not empircal observation. You are not going to change your dog, he will still chase rabbits, bark and do all the things dogs do. He will just be overall healthier, and loving, and you will not be adding to  the massive amount of needless killing that is going on. You do not have to kill an animal to feed an animal. We are not living in the jungle, so why bring the jungle to the home? All my support to you and your animal.

Agreed, as much as you dislike the idea of killing and eating another animal, our dogs need meat. I suggest if you are really concerned you feed your dog meat that has been raised in a humane way. Also, you'll need to combine the correct amounts of carbohydrates etc and probably a vitamin. Consult your vet about that. For a store bought choice I'd go with something organic, it's a start for sure. I use Nutro.

I am going to say this as a vegetarian and a dog owner and lover. Don't feed your dog a vegetarian diet it is not really that healthy for them, they are animals and they eat meat and what might be cool for us is not necessarily good for animals. If you won't listen to me then at least talk to a vet. and if they seem to think it is ok then make sure they give you a diet plan too keep the dog healthy, because that is most important.
