  1. Hollywood. There's a place called IFly (http://www.iflyhollywood.com/ ) in Hollywood; it's about 40 bucks for your first jump, about 30 miles from Irvine. You can do it as long as you're over 3 years old. If you're gonna go this route, pay the extra $20 and do the double-length package.

    If you're interested in the real thing: Lake Elsinore (http://skydiveelsinore.com/ ). It's about 120 bucks for your first jump, about 50 miles away. You can do it as long as you're over 18, or with a class and crazy parental permission slips. There's also a place in Hemet, which is closer, but it's a smaller field, the gear isn't as new (you don't skimp on a parachute), and its the same price. I jumped there once, and the scariest part of the experience was the plane flight up; I didn't think we were gonna make it high enough to use a 'chute.

    I can STRONGLY recommend doing the real thing though; it's just not the same. Indoor's neat and all, but I'd rank it like a carnival ride. The real thing will change your life. The high lasts for DAYS. After my first jump (even tandem), I spent the next week trying to figure out how I could save enough to get certified and buy my own rig.

    If you're afraid of heights, or want to ease into the sport, indoor won't do it. It's not the same experience at all. Further, it's not like floating or flying; you have a wind-tunnel blowing a baggy suit with you in it around. You feel like you're getting tossed about, not flying. Skydiving (for real), you feel like you're suspended, floating, on a column of liquid air. It's loud, but you DON'T feel like you're falling.

    Don't get me wrong; indoor's awesome. It's a lot of fun. But it's very short, and not at all what I'd thought it was going to be (I did real jumps first). Frankly, you'd get better entertainment value out of to tickets to Magic Mountain for you and a buddy, for about the same price and distance.

    EDIT ========================================...

    If you do find a place closer (like in OC), post a link when you close your question? I heard rumors that there was a place in Huntington/Long Beach, but I don't know of anyone who's found it, and it's supposed to be about twice as expensive.

  2. Indoor skydiving? Never heard of such a thing.
