  1. Thermostat because it 'senses' the temp, and regulates it to where you set it. Just like it does for your home.

A rheostat is nothing more than a variable resistor. For example: You set it to 70 degrees, or whatever mark on the rheostat coincides with 70 degrees at that time. (In otherwords, you set it, look at the thermometer, and it's 70 degrees.) But when you walk away and leave, the temperature may go way up, or it may go way down. It's like turning on a gas stove burner, at a medium flame, inside the house. Wind might pick up outside, and cool the house way down in the winter. Starts getting real cold inside. You're not there to turn it up a bit to compensate for the added cold.

(Had a friend who had an 18 foot Boa(?) Phython. Left for two days to work out of town. FORGOT TO PAY THE OVERDUE GAS BILL! Pregnant snake died! (That blows!)

Thermostats are probably the best.  I use dimmer switches.  I use digital probe thermometers to measure temps, then adjust the switch as needed.  These are sold in hardware stores in the lighting accessories.  You plug the pad into the switch, then plug the switch into an outlet.  There's a sliding control to adjust temps.  Also good for basking lamps as well.
