  1. http://www.wvculture.org/vrr/va_select.a...

has lots of them. Have fun!

You will find they are all for West Virginia, and they are not complete, but they are free.

If you say what kind of records, and for which county / shire / state / province / COUNTRY, people can give you better answers.

Unless you put it in your question, we can't tell what country you are in. It is the most frustrating thing Yahoo does. It doesn't matter if you go into domestic Yahoo or one of the International Yahoos (UK, Australia, Canada, India . . .), all of the questions in English go into one big "pot".

  2. At your local library.

  3. birth marriage and deaths records will be kept at your local BMD offices, you will have to take some id with you and they will give you a pass which lasts 4years you will find anything you need there going back to 16th century

  4. What type of records are you looking for and for what time period?

For UK 19th century births, marriages & deaths try http://freebmd.rootsweb.com/

For UK 19th century census records try

    http://freecen.rootsweb.com/cgi/search.p...

There are loads of facilities available online for free but you need to be more specific about what you want. There are literally hundreds of sites where free transcriptions can be accessed. The best place to start is with GENUKI for the county in question and work from there - http://www.genuki.org.uk/

  5. Yes freebmd is quite good, there is a page of tables showing what proportion has been transcribed for each year, so that helps, and you can cross reference with the 1881 census. One other thing, it is always worth looking to see if there are family history societies in the areas your family came from, just very occasionally there are some that put a lot of records online for free, Towcester is the only one I know of, but there might be others.  Genes Reunited is worth a look too as you might be able to connect with someone who is also in your tree and may have already done some research.  There's a small charge if you want to contact people, but I think it's only about £9.00 a year, and you can search for names for free first.  I think you can also put what you know of your tree on it for free, and then someone might contact you, this happened to me and I got the whole of one of my grandmother's trees from a cousin, so I would say that it is definitely worth it, and even if nothing happens at first people are joining up all the time.

  6. Libraries and churches/chapels.

Also checkout what info is available free under the Freedom of Information Act from local authorities.

  7. UK answer.

There is only one site that is free, but their records are incomplete,  someone as already given the details for the site which is the Freebmd site. There is only one completely free UK census and that's the 1881 census,  the census returns on the Freebmd site are once again incomplete. You can now purchase pay per view vouchers with www.ancestry.co.uk  I don't don't know what the vouchers entitle you to see or down load, sorry.

    Hope this helps.
