the best way to buy a domain for free is to purchase your domain and webhosting together. In this way it is possible to get your domain for free. Some webhosting companies offer this as a gift .I am using hostmonster webhosting for mine

You can buy a domain name from Smartyhost.

It's not expensive and you don't have to host with them. Go to www.smartyhost.com.au

I do not know of any place to get a free domain name.  The only "Free" domains come with paid hosting.  Free hosts normally require that you buy a domain from them.  $7-10 is not a lot of money.
