my job offers "free" health insurance. it basically covers any immediate care visits and im not sure about hospital visits. but the coverage is really bad. we may pay like a 20 dollar co pay to visit an immediate care, but we have no prescription coverage if we need something. does anyone know of something i can get as a self pay in addition to this coverage? i got sick and got stuck paying almost 100 bux on a prescription!! it would be nice if i didnt have to do that again.

  1. I don't know of any.

My suggestion would be that when ever you do go to a physician, you tell them you don't have drug coverage and ask if they have any samples (Drug reps drop them off at their office, they have closet's full of them), if they don't have a sample ask them to prescribe a cheap alternative.

  2. Prescription drug coverage is sold as a stand alone item, (separate from the medical portion of your insurance) to individuals that are not part of a group, IF you qualify to purchase it. To qualify, you must be eligible for and enrolled in Medicare part A & B. Believe me, you will know when you are eligible, because you get on mailing lists, and get slammed with mail and phone calls from every insurance company that offers it.  Another option available to you is a low cost or no cost prescription drug card. These are discount only programs, not insurance, where you can save up to 30 percent. Be sure you don't already have one and not aware of it because it could be free. A lot of insurance companies and many organizations give you these cards as an added bonus to do business with them, without ever advertising for the cards themselves. Look at who you have your auto and life insured with, are you a member of Anything?. These cards do not do the whole job, but could be useful and many have other discounts on items like dental, chiropractic, and vision. Just don't pay a monthly premium for one of these unless you can really save some serious bucks over the long term, like if you have maintenance meds that you are taking. Instead, I would save a little from each paycheck and put it up as an emergency fund. Good luck.

  3. As far as I know there is no stand alone policy that covers prescription drugs only.

My only suggestion would be to see if your employer would add prescription coverage at the renewal. Your employer probably does not offer the prescription coverage because of the additional cost. So, it might mean that you would have to pay something for your "free" health insurance to offset the additional premiums. You also would likely have to get a majority of your fellow employees to agree with you because if the coverage was added it would apply to all participants.
