Well the legend is he has been spotted all over the world from India to Vegas, but the last real record is he boarded the Dover - Calais ferry. The most sensible theory is he threw himself over-board but that's not such a good story.

After the murder of his children's nanny he was flown out of the country by light aircraft first to France then to Italy where he boarded a merchant ship to Egypt and eventually on to South Africa all the while protected by friends.  He died in Mozambique in 1998 of a heart attack
